Choose a physiotherapist with a recognised degree such as a B.PT or M.PT, relevant experience for your problem, a clear assessment and explanation, an exercise focused plan with goals, and honest communication. Be cautious of anyone who promises a cure, relies only on machines, or sells long packages without clear goals.

Search “physiotherapist near me” in Ahmedabad and you will find dozens of options: large hospital departments, clinic chains, independent physiotherapists and home visit services. How do you choose the right one for you or your family?

As a physiotherapist with more than 10 years of experience in Ahmedabad, I have seen how much the right choice matters. Here is a practical checklist, whoever you decide to see.

## 1\. Check qualifications

A physiotherapist in India should have a **Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B.PT)** degree from a recognised university. Some also have a **Master’s degree (M.PT)** in an area such as orthopaedics, neurology, cardiopulmonary care, pediatrics or sports.

Additional certifications, for example in manual therapy, Pilates, women’s health or fitness training, show ongoing learning.

It is perfectly reasonable to ask: “What is your qualification, and where did you study?” A good physiotherapist will be happy to answer.

## 2\. Look for relevant experience

Physiotherapy covers many areas. Someone who mainly treats sports injuries may have less experience with stroke rehabilitation, and vice versa. Ask:

- “Do you often treat patients with my problem?”
- “How many years have you been practising?”
- “Have you worked in hospitals or rehabilitation centres?”

Experience across hospital, public health and private settings gives a physiotherapist a broad view of many conditions.

## 3\. Expect a proper assessment

The first session should include a detailed conversation and a physical examination, not just a machine treatment. A good physiotherapist will:

- Ask about your history, health and goals
- Examine your movement, strength and the painful area
- Check for warning signs that need a doctor
- Explain the likely cause in words you understand

If someone starts treatment without asking questions or examining you, that is a warning sign.

## 4\. Look for an active, exercise based plan

Research and international guidelines support **exercise** and **education** as central parts of treatment for most musculoskeletal problems, such as back pain and knee arthritis. Machines like TENS, ultrasound or heat can help with pain in the short term, but they should support exercise, not replace it.

A good plan includes:

- Clear goals, such as walking for 30 minutes without pain
- Exercises you understand and can do at home
- Regular progress checks
- A plan for when you can manage on your own

## 5\. Good communication and respect

You should feel listened to and comfortable asking questions. A good physiotherapist:

- Explains what they are doing and why
- Asks for your consent before hands on treatment
- Respects your privacy, especially for women’s health concerns
- Speaks in a language you are comfortable with, whether Gujarati, Hindi or English
- Involves your family when helpful, such as for children or older adults

## 6\. Honesty about results

Recovery depends on many factors. A trustworthy physiotherapist gives you an honest estimate of how long recovery may take and what is realistic. They also tell you when you need to see a doctor, or when physiotherapy is not the right treatment.

## 7\. Convenience and continuity

Practical factors matter too:

- **Location:** a practice close to home makes regular sessions easier
- **Home visits:** essential for some older adults and patients after surgery
- **Online options:** useful for follow ups and busy schedules
- **Seeing the same physiotherapist:** continuity helps track your progress

## Red flags to watch for

Be cautious if a physiotherapist or clinic:

- **Promises a cure or guaranteed results**
- **Treats you only with machines**, without exercise or explanation
- **Pushes you to buy long, expensive packages** on the first day, without clear goals
- **Does not examine you** before treating
- **Does not explain your problem** or answer your questions
- **Discourages you from seeing a doctor** when you have warning signs
- **Makes you dependent**, with no plan to help you manage on your own

## Questions to ask before you book

1. What are your qualifications and experience?
2. Do you often treat my type of problem?
3. Will I see you every time, or a different therapist?
4. What does the first session involve?
5. Do you offer home visits or online sessions?
6. How will we measure my progress?
7. What are your fees?

## How I work

To be transparent, here is how I approach care in my practice in Chandranagar:

- I hold a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from Gujarat University (SBB College of Physiotherapy, V.S. Hospital, 2014)
- I have more than 10 years of experience, including five years at the AMC Physiotherapy Center
- I am a certified fitness trainer with the Indian Academy of Fitness Training
- As an independent physiotherapist, I see and treat every patient myself
- I offer practice visits, home visits and online consultations
- I focus on exercise, education and clear goals, and I tell you honestly when you need a doctor

## What good progress looks like

Once you start physiotherapy, how can you tell it is going well? Signs of good care include:

- **Clear goals from the start,** such as walking for 20 minutes or climbing stairs without holding the rail
- **Regular measurements,** like how far your joint bends, how long you can stand or how far you can walk
- **A changing plan:** exercises get more challenging as you improve
- **Growing independence:** you understand your condition and can manage more on your own
- **Fewer sessions over time,** with a plan for what to do after treatment ends

If after a few weeks you see no change and the plan has not changed either, ask your physiotherapist why. A good physiotherapist welcomes these questions.

## Online reviews: how to read them

Google reviews and ratings can help, but read them carefully. Look for detailed reviews that describe the patient’s problem and experience, and how the physiotherapist explained and treated it. A handful of thoughtful reviews is often more useful than many short ones.

## When to see a physiotherapist

Consider physiotherapy if you have:

- Pain in your back, neck or joints lasting more than a few days
- An injury from sport, work or a fall
- Stiffness or weakness after surgery or a fracture
- Balance problems or falls
- A neurological condition affecting movement
- Pregnancy related pain or bladder leakage
- A child with delayed motor development

## Warning signs that need a doctor

See a doctor first, or urgently, if you have:

- Chest pain, severe breathlessness or signs of a stroke (call 108)
- Numbness around the genitals or loss of bladder or bowel control
- Severe pain after an accident, a deformed limb or inability to bear weight
- Fever with back or joint pain
- Unexplained weight loss or night pain that keeps getting worse

## A final tip

Trust how you feel after the first visit. You should leave understanding your problem better, knowing what to do at home, and feeling confident about the plan.

## Ask about home and online options

If travel is hard, or you have a busy schedule, ask whether the physiotherapist offers home visits or online follow up sessions. Flexible options make it easier to stay regular with treatment.

## Key points to remember

- Check for a recognised physiotherapy degree and relevant experience.
- Expect a proper assessment and a clear explanation at the first visit.
- Good plans focus on exercise, education and measurable goals.
- Be cautious of promised results, machine only treatment and large upfront packages.

## The bottom line

The right physiotherapist is qualified, experienced in your problem, assesses you properly, focuses on active treatment with clear goals, and communicates honestly. Take a few minutes to ask questions before you book. If you are in Ahmedabad and would like to talk about your problem, call or WhatsApp me.

## Frequently asked questions

What qualification should a physiotherapist have in India?

Look for a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B.PT) degree from a recognised university. Some physiotherapists also have a Master's degree (M.PT) in a speciality, such as orthopaedics, neurology or sports.

Is a clinic better than an independent physiotherapist?

Both can provide excellent care. Independent physiotherapists often offer more continuity, as you see the same person each time. What matters most is the physiotherapist's skill, experience and approach.

How do I know if physiotherapy is working?

You should see measurable progress over a few weeks, such as less pain, better movement, walking further or sleeping better. A good physiotherapist tracks this with you and changes the plan if progress stalls.

Should physiotherapy be painful to work?

No. Some exercises may be uncomfortable, and you may feel mild soreness afterwards, but treatment should not be very painful. Good physiotherapists adjust treatment to what you can manage.
