What is neck pain?
Neck pain is pain or stiffness in the neck, often spreading to the shoulders, upper back or head. It is one of the most common reasons people visit a physiotherapist.
Most neck pain comes from the muscles and small joints of the neck being under strain. A very common reason today is how we use phones and laptops. When you bend your head forward to look at a screen, the load on your neck increases a lot. Over hours each day, this leads to tight muscles, stiffness and pain. Doctors sometimes call this “text neck”.
Other causes include sleeping in an awkward position, carrying heavy bags on one shoulder, stress, sudden jerks during travel, and age related changes called cervical spondylosis.
Who gets neck pain
- Office workers, IT professionals and students who spend long hours on screens
- People who use their phone a lot, especially while lying down
- Two wheeler riders who wear heavy helmets on long rides
- Teachers, tailors, dentists and others who look down for long periods
- Older adults with stiff necks
- People under stress, who tend to hold tension in their shoulders
Common signs of neck pain
- Stiffness that makes it hard to turn your head while driving or reversing
- Aching across the shoulders by the end of the day
- Headaches that start at the back of the head
- Pain, tingling or numbness spreading into the arm or hand
- A feeling of heaviness in the head and neck
How I help
- Assessment: I check how your neck moves, test the nerves to your arms, and look at your posture and working setup.
- Hands on therapy: gentle mobilisation and soft tissue release to ease stiffness and muscle tension.
- Exercise: neck and upper back exercises to improve movement and strengthen the deep neck muscles that support your head.
- Posture and screen setup: simple changes, such as raising your laptop to eye level, using a separate keyboard, holding your phone higher and taking short breaks every 30 to 45 minutes.
- Relaxation and breathing: to release shoulder tension linked to stress.
Your first session
I ask about your pain, your work and screen habits, your sleep and your pillow. I check your neck, shoulders and upper back, and test the nerves to your arms. Then I start treatment and teach you two or three simple exercises you can do even at your desk. If you work at a computer, a photo of your desk setup is very helpful.
How many sessions you may need
Recent neck pain often settles within 4 to 6 sessions. Long standing neck pain may need 6 to 8 sessions, along with posture changes at work and home. Online follow up sessions work well for checking exercises and desk setup.
See a doctor first if you have
- Neck pain after a fall or road accident
- Neck pain with fever, rash and headache
- Weakness in the arms or legs, or problems with walking or balance
- Sudden severe headache unlike any before
In an emergency, call 108.
Frequently asked questions
Is my neck pain from cervical spondylosis?
Cervical spondylosis means age related changes in the neck bones and discs. These changes are very common on X-rays after age 40, even in people without pain. Physiotherapy helps whether or not these changes are present.
What pillow is best for neck pain?
Choose a pillow that keeps your neck in line with your body, not too high or too flat. Most people do well with one medium pillow. I can check your sleeping position and suggest changes.
Should I wear a cervical collar?
A soft collar is rarely needed for ordinary neck pain and can make the neck stiffer if worn for long. Gentle movement usually helps more. Use a collar only if a doctor advises it.
